Since Chinese New Year celebrations are held on the day when the sunlight was fully brightened, many of the food preparation and cooking is done for this occasion. Because of this there is a great deal of pressure to prepare and cook food quickly. Many traditional dishes such as 'centrepiece' (xiao mian), 'bean roaster', 'roasted broad bean rice', 'turban' and 'rice cake' are all typical dishes that people prepare and cook during Chinese New Year celebrations. Many of these dishes are very spicy and can be very hot to eat.

While Chinese New Year celebrations are extremely important to the Chinese people, there is no direct government control of the Chinese language or customs. However, many of the traditions and cultural beliefs hold true and are kept as part of traditional Chinese culture. For example, for Chinese New Year it is important to hold funerals. This is because traditionally the bodies are eaten by relatives and family in order to appease the gods. Sometimes if the body is not cremated the remains are allowed to be buried in the family cemetery.

When Chinese New Year celebrations begin in earnest, the first step is for every household to make a white rooster symbol of good fortune for the coming year. This is done by making a small pile of rice paper and attaching red ribbons to it. Then the paper is draped around the house and the ribbons are fastened on the ends. The whole area is then decorated with red and white ribbons and a small lantern is lit in the town square to represent the fire of prosperity.

Many Chinese people hold celebrations for other reasons besides the New Year. On Chinese astrology day (also known as the New Lunar Year), the citizens of an area celebrate by parading and displaying their wealth and riches. The money can be displayed in various ways depending on how wealthy the people of the area are. At the end of the parading procession everyone has a chance to catch a dragon ball which is a representation of prosperity.

There is much joy and happiness and the people celebrate by making lots of sweets, especially cookies. People even decorate their homes with fresh flowers and candles. During the celebrations, there are firecrackers which signal the beginning of the celebrations. Firecrackers are set off every thirty seconds to frighten away evil spirits and demons and at the same time bring in good luck and good fortune.

When Chinese people look back on Chinese new year celebrations, they see that they have really developed as a nation.
